National Youth Service Corps Good times for corps members as NYSC increases allowance
Barely two weeks after NYSC DG informed corps members about increase
in their allowance, transportation and local allowance have been
increased.
As the 2018 Batch, A Stream 1 Corps Members are rounding off their orientation course, the National Youth Service Corps has announced an increase in their allowances.
The Scheme's Director, Press and Publications Mrs Adenike Adeyemi announced the increase in the corps members' transportation and local allowances in a statement.
The
statement states that the transport allowance for each corps member has
been increased from N1,500 to N1,800, while their local allowance is
now N1,400.
The statement also reads that the increase was in line with the Federal Government’s approved minimum wage for Civil Servants.
NYSC DG recently announced increment in allowance
Recall that on Monday, April 23, 2018, the NYSC Director-General, Sulaiman Kazaure said that the increase in corps members allowance will be determined by the Federal Government's new national minimum wage.
Kazaure
while fielding questions from newsmen made this announcement after the
swearing-in ceremony of the 2018 Batch ‘A’ corps members at the NYSC
orientation camp in Kusalla, Karaye Local Government Area of Kano state.
He said “our
efforts to ensure that the monthly allowance of the corps members is
increased have yielded a very good result following series of discussion
with the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige.
“The
N18,800 paid to Corps members is grossly inadequate to cater for their
needs during the mandatory one year service to the nation.
The 2018 Batch A Stream 1 Corps members will complete their orientation course on Wednesday May 9, 2018.

NYSC allowance in 2018
The NYSC allowance popularly known as “allawee” is the monthly allowance
paid by the federal government to all the Corp members. This money is
not a wage but rather something for the Corp members to take care of
needs during their one year of service. Before 2018, the monthly
allowance for all the NYSC Corpers was 18,800 Naira.
This amount is hardly enough for most of them to cater for their needs.
Earlier this year, the National Youth Service Corps began discussing
increment in the monthly allowance given to NYSC Corpers. According to
the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Mr. Sulaiman
Kazaure, the NYSC held series of discussion with the Minister of Labour
and Productivity.

Kazaure
Here is what the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps,
Mr. Sulaiman Kazaure said earlier this year concerning the increment of
the NYSC allowance.
“Our efforts to ensure that the monthly allowance of the corps members
is increased have yielded a very good result following series of
discussion with the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige.
The 18,800 Naira paid to Corps members is grossly inadequate to cater
for their needs during the mandatory one year service to the nation.
“The federal government had set-up a committee to look into the upward
review of the minimum wage which will determine the increase of the
corps members’ allowance.”
“We have been assured that when the new minimum wage takes effect, also
the corps members allowance will be reviewed upward,”

These talks yielded some positive results. The NYSC Scheme Director of
Press and Publications, Mrs. Adenike Adeyemi announce this around the
time when the NYSC 2018 Batch A Corp Members were rounding up their
orientation programme. She stated that the local allowance for the Corp
members is now 1,400 Naira and the transportation allowance have been
increased from 1,500 Naira to 1,800 Naira.
Although the federal government is yet to implement a new national
minimum wage, some good news came out of the talks of increment.
Hopefully, by the time the new national minimum wage is implemented, the
NYSC allowance will also be raised.
